My name is Pavel Lafata and I live in České Budějovice, South Bohemia, Czechia. I began observing and photographing celestial objects in the summer of 2023. The universe, the wonders of the deep space, their size, diversity, and beauty have always fascinated me. At the same time, I enjoy photography, keep up with technical innovations, and have always enjoyed observing through optical instruments, which is why I decided to combine all of this into a single goal, a single hobby: astrophotography. I specialize in astrophotography of deep-sky objects (DSOs), such as galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters, but from time to time I also touch photographing objects in our solar system (the Moon, the Sun), which require a slightly different technique and equipment.

I learned and studied this fascinating yet demanding field primarily through various online sources, such as the YouTube videos, sought advices and exchanged ideas with more experienced photographers on various online forums, and, of course, learned from my own mistakes and through a process of trial and error. Astrophotography, unlike regular photography, is not just about the art and aesthetics of taking the photo itself; a significant amount of time is spent on preparing, maintaining, and caring for one’s equipment—telescopes, cameras, mounts, filters, focusing mechanisms, and other essential gear. I like designing, manufacturing, and upgrading a wide range of adapters, mounts and various brackets, and other mechanical components myself, including upgrading the scopes and their parts. I always measure and examine the correct settings for every detail of the telescope, mount, and all optical and mechanical components to ensure everything function properly and the result is as good as possible.

At the same time, capturing a deep space object correctly and optimally is only half the battle; the second, equally important part of the work involves processing and creating the final photograph, the image, using specialized software on a computer. Even the best-captured data won’t stand out if it’s poorly processed, and although various advanced software programs utilizing AI and modern algorithms are available today, they still can’t produce a nice result from poorly captured data. My photographs also show that there is always a much to learn and room for improvement. From time to time, I often try to photograph many subjects again and again, especially the ones fromy from my astrophotography beginnings, to make them better and better, and when comparing the new shots with the old ones, the progress is hopefully visible.

I believe and hope that after viewing my photos and reading the information provided here, perhaps one evening under a dark, starry sky, you will look up for a moments and gaze among the stars, imagining all the objects in the deep space captured in these photographs. And just like me, you too will be fascinated by the beauty and infinity of the universe.

My Visions & Astrophotography

I started astrophotography as a simple hobby, and it quickly captivated me completely. Through the lens of my telescope, my interest deepened not only in capturing celestial objects but in understanding the universe and its immense wonders as a whole. What began as a pastime has gradually evolved into a semi-professional passion.

I continuously find room for improvement—whether it is investing in more advanced astrophotography equipment, refining my observation techniques, or mastering complex image processing software. I am dedicated to pushing my limits and pursuing this passion well into the future. Recently, I realized how much I want to share my discoveries, experiences, and the sheer awe of the cosmos with others who share this enthusiasm. That is why I created this website: to serve as a gallery of my deep-sky captures and a hub for articles, information, and insights about the universe.

However, a single website cannot contain all my experiences, ideas, and visions. Therefore, I am very open to various forms of collaboration.
